On December 2, ZEDEDA hosted the second episode of their ZEDEDA Transform Digest series. In this series, leaders from across industries discuss topics from the ZEDEDA Transform 2021 event held earlier this year that brought together experts from the edge computing and IoT landscape.
Moderated by Jason Shepherd, VP of Ecosystem at ZEDEDA, episode two of the Transform Digest series included panelists Bharath Ramesh, Head of Edge AI Software and Solutions at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Khondoker Huq, Global Head of Market Strategy, IoT, at SAS. Together, the three will be touching upon the hot topic of Edge AI.
While digitalization is on the rise, edge AI represents one of the fastest-growing technologies in the market today. The application is a system that uses Machine Learning algorithms to process data generated by a hardware device at the local level. The device does not need to be connected to the Internet to process such data and make decisions in real-time, in a matter of milliseconds, which considerably reduces the communication costs derived from a cloud-based model.
There are a plethora of examples of this technology already accessible for consumers today, with devices such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and the Apple Homepod all leveraging edge AI to obfuscate their personal details and to recognize wake words (e.g., Hey Alexa) to open up lines of communication to cloud servers. The technology also has a variety of enterprise-ready capabilities, especially in computer vision, which is truly what’s driving its rapid growth. Last year, the edge AI had a market size of USD 590 million and, moving forward, is predicted to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 20.8 percent over the next five years, with estimations putting the market size at USD 1,835 million by 2026.
The rapid adoption of edge AI applications comes as no surprise once the benefits of the technology are mentioned. Edge AI processes data right at the edge, reducing latency, bandwidth, and cloud costs while improving security and privacy. However, much like a majority of the new technologies that are hitting the open market today, edge AI comes with complexities in terms of solution development, deployment, and management that make leveraging the technology challenging for some organizations looking to reap the benefits.
Here is where ZEDEDA’s Transform Digest second episode comes into play, as the panel unraveled some of the complexities surrounding edge AI technology. The two industry leader panelists tackled high-level topics such as:
- What exactly is edge AI?
- What’s the “killer app”?
- What are the biggest challenges for deploying edge AI in the real world?
- When it comes to ensuring data integrity and protecting privacy, how can edge AI help?
- What are the major trends in edge AI over the next several years?
